This Saturday I'm off to Patagonia. Last week I talked about what photo gear I was bringing and I had a number of viewers ask me how I travel internationally with my tall tripod. In this video I'll show you exactly how I pack it as well as other critical gear. I also address the question about which of the two Nikon Z cameras I more highly recommend.
New Portland Workshop, Moonrise Shoots and Apple's New Mac Pro.
(Links Below) I'm planning a moonrise shoot for my summer 2020 Portland, Oregon workshop, so I thought I'd share my process for being in the right place to incorporate the moon into landscapes and cityscapes. I'll show you how to use a combination of phone apps and website to figure out where to set up. Afterwards I talk a bit about Apple's new Mac Pro specs and build options and then take some questions about Nikon's Z6 and Z7 cameras. Finally I'll show some cool updates in the latest version of my favorite camera strap.

Gifts for Photographers
Here's a list of cool gifts any photographer will love that won't break the bank. I've had a fantastic year of photography adventures both with my family and my workshop students. Along the way I've found some new photo accessories that help me more easily capture the visual stories I'm after.

Cool news from ON1. There are new Video and Mobile products in the pipeline to release soon, and the Beta of Photo RAW 2020 is loose in the wild. I'll show you what I dig about it here. [YouTube]
Nikon Z6 Stills & Video, Review, Tips & Tricks (3 Videos)
Time to geek out on new gear. My filmmaker friend Andy Adkins and I have been testing the new Nikon Z6 to determine if it has a place in our camera bags for low light and video work. The Z cameras are a major shift for Nikon into the mirrorless market. Here are three videos that detail our honest opinions about how this camera works as well as suggestions for setting up a new Z if you have one.
In this first video I share my impressions. I have some notes on the way these cameras Depth of Field preview and focus assist are set up that I haven't seen in the other reviews. These and other handling and control issues relate equally to the higher megapixel Z7.
I've also had my good friend Andy Adkins test it's highly touted video capabilities. Andy is an Emmy Award winning filmmaker who's spend lots of time, shooting, directing, producing and editing with a variety of video cameras. In this week’s Approaching the Scene episode, we both give our impressions of what Nikon got right and where they still need to improve from a stills and video production standpoint.
Finally in this video I run through the settings I'm using to customize the controls on mine. These settings are identical on both the Z6 and Z7.

Approaching The Scene 016: Low-light Handheld Photography
I just wrapped up leading a workshop to photograph a candlelit festival in Mexico. We went light and handheld relying on the incredible high ISO performance of our modern digital sensors with fast prime lenses. In this video I'll pass along some of the lessons we learned while taking you on a tour of Michoacan and it's Dia de Muertos festival. It was a blast.
ON1 Photo RAW 2019 Released!
If you follow me you know I love working with ON1 It's not just the photo editing software that's fantastic, it's also the people who create it. I'm so proud they're using my images to promote this really amazing new version of Photo RAW just released today for 2019.
Since my first run with the alpha version, I’ve been impressed by the stability, features and refinement of this new version of Photo RAW 2019. It’s great to see them launch it to the public today!
What's new and cool? They've brought layers into the RAW workflow. Yes, you can non-destructively blend multiple RAW files now. The interface is updated and simplified with a new Edit Module that makes what was the most easy to use RAW photo editor even more intuitive. Along the way they've boosted RAW's stability and usability while adding support for focus stacking, RAW portrait retouching, placing text in your images and more. Bravo!

ATS 015: Packing for Dia De Muertos in Michoacan
When this episode goes live, I'll be teaching a workshop in Michoacan Mexico for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). One of my favorite celebrations in one of my favorite places. Choosing what gear to pack for a big trip like this -- it's one of the hardest things we photographers have to do. Here I'll show you what I'm taking with me on a trip that combines handheld, low-light street photography with landscape and travel. All the gear I showcase is linked below.
ATS 014: Sharpening & Noise Reduction When & How
Lets talk about noise reduction and sharpening. I've had a lot of questions about when to sharpen images as well as how to sharpen and do noise reduction both in Adobe's Lightroom and ON1's Photo RAW. In this video I'll talk about when sharpening makes a difference and show you my workflow in both Lightroom and ON1's brand new Photo RAW 2019 which I'm beta testing for them.
