Time to geek out on new gear. My filmmaker friend Andy Adkins and I have been testing the new Nikon Z6 to determine if it has a place in our camera bags for low light and video work. The Z cameras are a major shift for Nikon into the mirrorless market. Here are three videos that detail our honest opinions about how this camera works as well as suggestions for setting up a new Z if you have one.
In this first video I share my impressions. I have some notes on the way these cameras Depth of Field preview and focus assist are set up that I haven't seen in the other reviews. These and other handling and control issues relate equally to the higher megapixel Z7.
I've also had my good friend Andy Adkins test it's highly touted video capabilities. Andy is an Emmy Award winning filmmaker who's spend lots of time, shooting, directing, producing and editing with a variety of video cameras. In this week’s Approaching the Scene episode, we both give our impressions of what Nikon got right and where they still need to improve from a stills and video production standpoint.
Finally in this video I run through the settings I'm using to customize the controls on mine. These settings are identical on both the Z6 and Z7.
