Patagonia's Blog Feature: Scott Briscoe

I'm happy to have provided images for my friend Scott Briscoe's recently published article on Nature and the Opportunity to Build Diverse Coalitions. It's up on Patagonia's blog The Cleanest Line and I hope you'll take a moment to read it. 

Scott and I met on Denali while filming An American Ascent, the award winning documentary film about the first all African American climbing team to take on America's highest peak. Energized and informed by his experience on Denali as part of this team, Scott has become more and more engaged in increasing the diversity of the coalition of people standing up for the environment.

Scott, the article is great and I'm proud to call you my friend. Patagonia, you're corporate ethos is an example to be held up. Loved the stand you took in Utah at O.R. this year. Keep up the good work everyone.

CHARGED: INSPIRATIONAL DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

My friend George Potter shot An American Ascent on Denali with me. He also co-directed that award winning documentary.

We're all off on other projects now and George is working with Kickstarter to fund this documentary about the inspirational recovery of chef Eduardo Garcia after a tragic accident. I hope you'll watch the trailer and consider contributing to the project. It looks like a story that needs telling.

I'm often asked about my favorite place to photograph. My answer is simple. It's the next big place I haven't been. I have special places I often return to, but I love nothing more than stepping into the challenge of a new place. This fall it's Patagonia and I'm so excited. I hope you'll follow along on social. I'll be sharing the trip as I have data access.

Stacey and I will be down there with John Eascott and Yva Momatiuk. A new subject to photograph and two of my favorite people on earth; I can't wait!

For decades John and Yva have been adventuring and photographing together around the globe while creating stories for publications like National Geographic, Smithsonian, and BBC. The two of them are such a team that they never differentiate which of them took any particular photograph. On National Geographic's photographer bio page they are profiled together. They are an inspirational duo and I am more than proud to call them friends.

This is going to be a fabulous trip. I can't wait.

I'm writing this from a cozy rooftop Airbnb flat across the street from the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Italy is in the rear view mirror.

What a fabulous time Stacey and I had there. The beauty, the craziness, the food... Pizza in Naples, adventures on busses on insanely narrow mountain roads, climbing Stromboli, the shellfish linguine in Amalfi, hydrofoils and hiking the Sentieri Degli Dei (Pathway to the Gods). Looking back -- the past week feels like a lifetime; it will take more than 1000 words to tell the tale. Instead I'll leave you with these snapshots while we explore France...

EUROPE 2015 PART I: TURKEY AND GREECE

We have to leave the windmill tomorrow... Stacey and I've spent most of the past week in this amazing windmill high on the Island of Mykonos in Greece. The view is breathtaking. How amazing is Airbnb? We have so loved staying here; it will not be easy to leave behind.

Tomorrow we head off to climb Stromboli, the constantly erupting island volcano off Sicily. We take a hydrofoil from Naples! I hope you’ll join us for this adventure on Facebook and/or Instagram. I'm posting updates daily.

Bill Mackie and Laura Lovell at Applied Physics Technologies

It is so wonderful to see happy clients enjoying my prints. Applied Physics Technologies, a producer of hi-tech electron emitters just installed this metal print of Mount Hood and the Moon in their newly remodeled boardroom. It was a blast to swing by yesterday to meet them, sign the print and share the story of how I captured it. One of my favorite parts of this job is the fun connections with great people like this.

I've been wandering in the mountains long enough to respect their moods, so... I'm pivoting and taking off with Stacey for Death Valley today. A non-profit client is hosting an event down there and asked us to come photograph it. I love Death Valley in the Spring.

We'll be back Monday. If the mountains are in a better mood, then I'll be headed up Saint Helens on Tuesday. Fingers crossed...

An Important Trip to a Special Place

As Stacey and I get ready to board a plane headed west this morning, my thoughts are turning back to 2013. Last year was a rough one not only for my family, but for a number of my close friends' families as well. It was a year that contained a lot of loss in my circle. Last fall, after the passing of my grandfather that summer, we lost a truly inspirational and incredible woman, my Nana Georgia Henry.

Nana lived, loved, laughed and left the world a better place for having walked it. Even in her final hours she showed strength, grace and an innate sense of what was most important. She loved a good adventure and understood my wanderlust like few others that I've known. Her favorite place on earth was the North Shore of Kauai, and since I first stepped foot there nearly 20 years ago, I have shared her deep respect and love for the power of that place.

Today we are honored to join family from as far away as Perth, Australia who are boarding planes bound for Kauai to bring her ashes home. Every trip to Hanalei is special, but this one feels doubly so...

Who's Photographing Who?: Yva Momatiuk and John Eastcott in Mount Rainier National Park

I'm gearing up for a big, exciting adventure starting Monday. I'll be road-tripping up into central British Columbia to spend a week photographing this year's big Sockeye Salmon run with John Eascott and Yva Momatiuk. A new subject to photograph and two of my favorite people on earth; I can't wait!

For decades John and Yva have been adventuring and photographing together around the globe while creating stories for publications like National Geographic, Smithsonian, and BBC. The two of them are such a team that they never differentiate which of them took any particular photograph. On National Geographic's photographer bio page they are profiled together. They are an inspirational duo and I am more than proud to call them friends.

We will be working with DSLRs equipped with underwater housings to capture the "fishy" perspective. I'm gearing up with a heavy wetsuit, booties, gloves, hood, and snorkel gear. It's going to be some cold wet fun with thousands of bright red fish. I'm not sure how much connectivity I'll have up North, but I'll try to keep updates rolling on FB and Twitter as possible.

On my way home, I'm planning to meet up with a crew of great friends to backpack and photograph fall color in the North Cascades for five days. Should be an amazing couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
